A break is not a luxury, and it is not giving up

Looking after someone you love is relentless. Broken nights, no time that belongs to you, and a low-level worry that never quite switches off.

Respite care puts a trained carer in place so you can sleep, work, go away, or have an afternoon that is yours. Care carries on at home, in the routine your relative knows.

Most family carers wait far too long to ask for this. Asking is not a sign you are failing, and it is not abandoning anyone. Carers who take regular breaks keep going for years longer than those who do not, and the person you look after needs you to keep going. Booking respite is not the end of caring for someone at home. It is usually the thing that makes carrying on possible.

Four kinds of break, depending on what you need

All of this is respite at home. Your relative stays in their own house with their own routine, rather than going into a care home.

  • A few hours, every week

The same afternoon each week, so you have something reliably yours.

Often the most useful of the four.

  • Overnight cover

Waking or sleeping nights so you get an unbroken night.

  • Holiday and longer cover

A long weekend to a fortnight, with care continuing at home.

    Book early over school holidays.

  • Emergency respite

For when you are admitted to hospital, fall ill, or have a bereavement of your own.

Call us rather than using the form.

What happens while you are out

Whatever you normally do, we do. The plan is written from your handover, not from a template.

  • Personal care, washing, dressing and continence support
  • Medication prompts exactly as they are given now
  • Meals cooked the way your relative likes them
  • Company and the usual routine of the day
  • Laundry, washing up and keeping the house running
  • Support to appointments or out for some air
  • Overnight support where the cover includes nights
  • Written notes on how the time went

How we learn the routine before you go

"Nobody else knows how mum likes things done" is the most common reason families put off respite. It is a fair worry, so we take the handover seriously.

  1. A visit before the cover starts

We meet your relative with you there, so the first face is not a stranger's.

  2. A written routine, in your words

Times, preferences, how tea is made, which chair, what unsettles them, what settles them.

  3. The same carer wherever possible

Especially for repeat respite, so the second break is easier than the first.

  4. One number to ring

If you want to check in, you can. Most people ring once on the first day and then stop.

Who respite care is for

  • A spouse doing everything

No rota behind them, day or night.

  • An adult son or daughter

Care fitted around a job and a house of your own.

  • No break in months

Where a weekly afternoon would change the week.

  • Something already booked

A holiday, a wedding, or an operation of your own.

If you need cover today

Sometimes the emergency is not your relative's, it is yours. A fall, an admission, a bereavement, or waking up unable to do it today.

Call us and say it is urgent. We will tell you straight away what we can cover and how soon, rather than booking an assessment in ten days.

If your relative needs urgent medical help, call 111 for advice or 999 in an emergency.

How we deliver respite

  • Your routine, not ours

The handover is the plan. We do not arrive with our own way of doing things.

  • Consistent carers

The same people for repeat cover, so it gets easier each time.

  • Notes you can read

A written account of how the time went, waiting for your return.

  • Honest about availability

If we cannot cover your dates, we say so quickly.

  • Cover that can extend

If the break needs to be longer, or regular, that is easy to arrange.

Paying for respite

Respite is sometimes funded, and many family carers do not realise they can ask.

If you look after someone regularly, you have the right to a carer's assessment from your local council, separate from any assessment of your relative's needs. It looks at the effect caring has on you, and can lead to funding for breaks, direct payments, or other practical support.

Contact adult social care at Derbyshire County Council or Derby City Council, depending on where you live, and ask for a carer's assessment. We can also arrange respite privately, and we will tell you the cost in writing before anything is booked.

Common questions about respite care

How much notice do you need?

Usually a week or two for regular cover, and as early as possible for holidays. For emergencies, call us and we will tell you honestly what is possible.

Is this respite at home, or a care home stay?

At home. Your relative stays in their own house, in their own bed, and a carer comes to them.

Can you cover a full week or fortnight?

Yes, with daytime visits, overnight cover, or a live-in carer. We will talk through which fits.

Can you arrange emergency respite?

Often, yes. Call rather than emailing, say it is urgent, and we will be straight about what we can cover and when.

How do you learn my relative's routine?

With a visit before cover starts and a written routine in your words. The handover is the plan.

Is respite care funded by the local authority?

Sometimes. Ask your council for a carer's assessment, which can lead to funding for breaks. We can also arrange respite privately.

Will it be the same carer each time?

Wherever possible, yes. Familiarity makes the second break far easier than the first.
