When shopping and cooking have become too much

Eating well is one of the first things to slip when someone is unwell, low in mood or living alone. Appetite fades, the shopping becomes a struggle, and meals turn into whatever is quickest or nothing at all.

Our carers plan and cook proper meals in your own kitchen, sit with you while you eat if that helps, and keep an eye on how much is actually eaten. We cook the food you have always eaten, the way you have always eaten it.

If a family has noticed weight loss, a fridge full of untouched food or a parent skipping meals, this is usually the service that helps first. We also flag anything concerning to you and, where needed, to the GP.

What practical care and nutrition support includes

Your plan is built at your free assessment around what you eat and what you need help with. Typically it covers:

  • Planning meals around your own tastes and appetite
  • Shopping in person, or placing an online order with you
  • Cooking fresh meals, and plating a meal or snack for later
  • Support with eating and drinking where it is needed
  • Encouraging and keeping track of drinks through the day
  • Following the dietary requirements in your care plan
  • Watching for appetite changes, weight loss or signs of dehydration
  • Safe food storage, checking dates and clearing out spoiled food
  • Washing up and leaving the kitchen clean
  • Raising concerns with your family and, where agreed, your GP

Food that matches the person

Our carers come from communities across the UK, Europe, Africa and Asia, and that means we can often match a carer to the food someone actually grew up with. For a person who has eaten the same dishes for seventy years, that is not a small detail.

We follow medical and religious dietary requirements exactly as set out in the care plan. Where a GP or dietitian has advised a diet, we follow their guidance rather than our own.

  • Halal
  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • Diabetic
  • Low salt
  • Soft and easy chew
  • Gluten free
  • Dairy free
  • South Asian
  • West African
  • Caribbean
  • Eastern European

If a diet you need is not listed, ask. We would rather tell you honestly whether we can support it than promise and get it wrong.

Who nutrition support at home helps

  • Someone who has stopped cooking

Where the effort of a meal has become greater than the appetite for it.

  • Someone losing weight

Where meals need cooking and encouraging, not just delivering.

  • Someone who cannot shop safely

Where carrying bags or getting to the shops has become too much.

  • A family who suspect meals are being skipped

Where a fridge of untouched food has raised the alarm.

How we deliver nutrition support

  • Your recipes, not ours

We cook what you like, the way you like it, and we write it down so every carer gets it right.

  • Choice at every meal

You decide what you are eating, even when someone else is cooking it.

  • We watch without hovering

Appetite and fluid intake are noted quietly, not turned into a running commentary.

  • Food hygiene taken seriously

Safe storage, correct temperatures, dates checked, kitchen left clean.

  • We report, we do not diagnose

If we are worried about eating or weight, we tell you and your GP rather than guess.

What a typical lunchtime visit looks like

Your carer arrives, checks what you fancy from what is in, and puts the kettle on before anything else. If the shopping is running low, they will note what is needed or pick it up on the way next time.

They cook in your kitchen, to your recipe, and plate a modest portion rather than an intimidating one. If you want company while you eat, they sit down with you. If you would rather have the radio on in peace, they get on with the washing up.

Before leaving they put a plated meal in the fridge for later, leave a drink within reach, and note how much was eaten. If that has been dropping, your family hears about it.

Common questions about meals and nutrition support

Can you cook the meals my mum has always eaten?

Yes, and we would rather do that than impose a menu. Her recipes go into the care plan so every carer cooks them the same way.

Do you do the shopping, and how is it paid for?

Carers can shop in person or order online with you. Money handling follows a written procedure with receipts recorded every time, explained fully at your assessment.

Can you support a specialist or medical diet?

Yes, where it is set out in the care plan. Carers follow the diet advised by your GP or dietitian. We do not design diets ourselves.

Can you cook halal, vegetarian or other cultural food?

Yes. Our team spans a wide range of backgrounds, and we will tell you honestly whether we can match a carer to the cooking you want.

Will you tell us if she is not eating?

Yes. Appetite and drinks are noted at every visit, and we contact you if we are concerned rather than waiting for a review.

Can this be combined with personal care?

Yes, and it usually is. A morning visit often covers washing, dressing, medication and breakfast together.
