Our services are inspected by the Care Quality Commission and rated Good, so the standards you will be asked to work to are standards that have been checked.
The honest version
What the job is actually like
A typical day is a run of calls, most of them to people you see every week. You let yourself in with a key safe, and the first thing you do is find out how the night went. Then it is the practical work: helping someone wash and dress, prompting medication, getting breakfast on, writing up the notes.
Some visits are quick and straightforward. Some are not. Somebody is having a bad day, or has had a fall, or does not want you there at all this morning. You will need patience for those, and you will need to be the kind of person who rings the office rather than hoping it sorts itself out.
The parts people tell us they did not expect are how much of the job is conversation, and how attached you get. You will know which chair is theirs and how they take their tea. That is not a side effect of the work, it is the work.

A proper conversation, usually at the Derby office, about the work itself and what a shift really looks like.
Checks, then induction
An enhanced DBS check and references, which take a little time. Once those are through, you start with induction and shadow shifts.

Training and development
You will not be sent out unprepared
Everyone starts with an induction covering the practical skills the job needs, followed by shadow shifts alongside an experienced carer. You do not work alone until both you and your coordinator are confident you are ready.
From there, training continues. We support carers working towards the Care Certificate and towards diploma level qualifications, and there are specialist areas such as dementia and end-of-life care where further training is available for people who want to go deeper.
We will go through exactly what is available, how it is funded and how long each part takes when we speak, so you get the real answer rather than a list of course names.
